01Engine families found in International trucks

International has built trucks with its own engines, including the DT466, the MaxxForce line, and later the A26 and S13. Cummins engines such as the ISX15, X15, L9 and B6.7 have also been offered in many models. Older Internationals, including some 9000-series highway trucks, ran Caterpillar or Detroit Series 60 engines.

02MaxxForce and engine swaps

Some owners of MaxxForce-equipped trucks look at replacing with a different engine family. That is a significant project involving mounts, cooling, wiring, ECM and aftertreatment. If you are considering it, talk to your shop first and tell us exactly what you plan to install so we search for the right unit.

03Transmissions

International trucks commonly run Eaton Fuller manual transmissions, Eaton automated manuals, and Allison automatics in medium-duty and vocational models like the DuraStar and WorkStar. Check your transmission tag and build data.

04VIN, engine serial and build sheet

International build data tied to the VIN lists the original engine, transmission and options. The engine serial confirms the exact engine and emissions period. Both are needed to match a replacement properly.

05What to have ready

Before you call, gather:

  • Full VIN
  • Engine model and serial number
  • Transmission model and serial if needed
  • Truck model and year
  • Whether you are replacing like for like or planning a different engine

FAQ

International engine & transmission questions

What engine is in my International?

Check the engine tag or the build data tied to your VIN. Depending on year and model it could be a Navistar engine such as a DT466, MaxxForce, A26 or S13, or a Cummins or Caterpillar engine.

Can I replace a MaxxForce with a Cummins?

It is sometimes done, but it is a major conversion. Mounts, cooling, wiring, ECM and aftertreatment all come into play. Plan it with your shop before ordering.

Do you source DT466 engines?

Yes. Send the engine serial and VIN and we search supplier sources for a matching DT466.

Do you source Allison transmissions for DuraStars?

Yes. Send the Allison ID plate details and VIN and we search for a matching unit.

Are you an International dealer?

No. We are an independent sourcing company. We search supplier sources nationwide and confirm availability and freight on your quote.
