used International truck engines
Used International Truck Engines
Send us your International engine serial number and truck VIN, and we search supplier sources nationwide for a used DT466, MaxxForce or A26 that matches your truck. Availability, condition and freight vary by unit and are confirmed on your quote.
01International engine families
International trucks have used several generations of Navistar-built engines alongside engines from other makers. The DT466 is the long-running inline six, roughly 7.6 liters, used in medium-duty trucks and buses for decades. It was followed by the MaxxForce DT, a later version of the same basic engine.
The MaxxForce 7 is a V8 of roughly 6.4 liters used in medium-duty International trucks. The MaxxForce 13 is a roughly 12.4-liter heavy-duty engine used in ProStar and other Class 8 models. The A26, introduced later, is Navistar's 12.4-liter heavy-duty engine for the LT, RH and HX series. The newer S13 is a separate, later design.
International also installed Cummins engines in many trucks, including the ISX15, X15 and medium-duty Cummins engines. If your International has a Cummins engine, choose Cummins on the form instead.
02Finding the engine serial number
Navistar engines carry an engine serial number stamped on the block and printed on an engine label. The emissions label shows the engine family and certification model year.
If labels are missing, an International dealer can look up the engine specification from the truck VIN, and the serial number can be read from the ECM with Navistar diagnostic software.
Send photos of the block stamping and labels along with the VIN so our staff can identify the engine before searching.
- Engine serial number from block or label
- Engine model and emissions year
- Truck VIN and model
- Horsepower rating and transmission
03DT466 and MaxxForce DT
The DT466 is a wet-sleeve inline six valued by medium-duty fleets and shops for its rebuildability. Older versions used mechanical injection, while later electronic versions, often called DT466E, used hydraulically actuated electronic injection.
The MaxxForce DT continued the design with changes for later emissions standards, including EGR and aftertreatment. A MaxxForce DT is not a simple drop-in for an older DT466 truck, because the electronics, harness and emissions equipment differ.
Bus and truck versions of these engines can also differ in accessories and calibration, so tell us the vehicle type and VIN.
04MaxxForce 13, MaxxForce 7 and the EGR era
For the 2010 emissions standards, Navistar initially relied on high levels of EGR without SCR on its MaxxForce engines, later adopting SCR. That approach led to engines with very different aftertreatment configurations within a few model years.
Matching a MaxxForce 13 or MaxxForce 7 replacement therefore depends heavily on the exact emissions year and configuration. An engine from an EGR-only truck and one from an SCR-equipped truck are not interchangeable without major changes.
The MaxxForce 7 shares design roots with a Ford Power Stroke engine of similar displacement, but the International version uses its own parts and calibration. Do not assume a pickup engine is a substitute.
05A26 and later engines
The A26 is a 12.4-liter heavy-duty engine introduced for International's newer Class 8 trucks. It uses SCR aftertreatment and an architecture separate from the MaxxForce 13. Ratings range from the upper 300s to around 475 horsepower in many configurations.
The S13 is a newer engine family that followed the A26. If you have an S13, choose Other and give us the engine label details.

06What to tell us when you call
Have the engine serial number, truck VIN and emissions year ready. Tell us whether the vehicle is a truck or bus, whether you need a complete engine or long block, and which components you plan to reuse.
If the engine failed, describe the failure. We search supplier sources nationwide, and details on any available unit are confirmed on your written quote.
Applications
Trucks commonly running International engines
Factory engine options changed by model year. Always confirm against your engine serial number and VIN.

- The DT466 and MaxxForce DT are common in International DuraStar and WorkStar trucks and school buses, but truck and bus versions differ in accessories and calibration.
- The MaxxForce 7 appears in medium-duty International DuraStar trucks and should be matched by emissions year because of EGR and aftertreatment differences.
- The MaxxForce 13 was used in ProStar, TranStar and other Class 8 International models, with configurations that changed significantly across the 2010 to 2014 period.
- The A26 is used in International LT, RH and HX series trucks, and harness and software generation should be matched by VIN.
FAQ
International engine questions
Is the MaxxForce DT the same as a DT466?
It is a later version of the same basic engine, but it uses different electronics and emissions equipment. A MaxxForce DT is not a simple drop-in for an older DT466 truck.
What makes MaxxForce 13 engines hard to match?
Navistar changed its emissions approach during the 2010s, so trucks from close model years can have very different aftertreatment and electronics. The emissions year and serial number are essential.
Is the MaxxForce 7 a Ford engine?
It shares design roots with a Ford Power Stroke of similar displacement, but the International version uses its own parts and calibration. A pickup engine is not a direct substitute.
My International has a Cummins engine. Which page should I use?
Choose Cummins on the quote form and give us the Cummins ESN and CPL. Cummins engines are matched differently from Navistar engines.
Where is the serial number on an International engine?
It is stamped on the block and printed on an engine label. A dealer can also look it up from the truck VIN or read it from the ECM.
Are you affiliated with International or Navistar?
No. Commercial-Engines.com is an independent sourcing company. We search supplier sources nationwide for used engines that match your truck.
