Mack models
Used Mack engines by model
01The MP engine family
Mack's current engines are the MP series: the MP7 at roughly 10.8 liters, the MP8 at roughly 12.8 liters and the MP10 at roughly 16 liters. The MP7 and MP8 arrived around the 2007 emissions change, replacing the older Mack E7 and the ASET-era engines. The MP10 was added later for heavy-haul and high-torque work.
The MP8 is the most common engine in Mack highway trucks such as the Anthem and Pinnacle. The MP7 is used in lighter regional and vocational applications, including many Granite trucks. The MP10 is usually found in heavy-spec Granite, Pinnacle and Anthem configurations.
Each model has gone through multiple emissions and software generations, so the model name alone is not enough to identify a replacement.
03Finding the Mack engine serial number
The Mack engine serial number is stamped on the cylinder block and also appears on the engine identification label. The emissions label shows the engine family and the model year it was certified to.
If the labels are missing or hard to read, a Mack dealer can retrieve the engine specification from the truck VIN, and the engine serial number can be read from the ECM with Mack diagnostic tools.
Photos of the block stamping and labels, along with the truck VIN, let our staff confirm the model and generation before we search.
- Engine serial number from block or label
- Engine model and emissions year
- Truck VIN and model
- Transmission (manual or mDRIVE)
04Emissions eras and horsepower
MP engines from 2007 to 2009 use EGR and a diesel particulate filter. From 2010, Mack added SCR with DEF. Later MP engines were updated for the 2014 and 2017 greenhouse-gas standards with revised software and hardware.
The MP8 is typically rated from the upper 300s to around 500 horsepower, the MP7 lower, and the MP10 higher, up to around 600 horsepower in some versions. Exact ratings depend on the year and calibration.
If your Mack has the mDRIVE automated manual transmission, the engine software must be compatible with it. Tell us the transmission model when you request a quote.
05Older Mack engines
Before the MP series, Mack trucks used engines such as the E7 and the ASET AC and AI engines. These older engines have their own serial numbers, mechanical or electronic fuel systems and emissions certifications, and they are not interchangeable with MP engines.
If you have an older Mack such as a CH, CX or Vision with a pre-MP engine, choose Other on the form and give us the engine label details. We will search based on that information.

06What to tell us when you call
Have the engine serial number, truck VIN and emissions year ready. Let us know if you need a complete engine or a long block, and which components you are reusing, such as the turbo, aftertreatment and accessories.
If the engine failed, describe the failure. We search supplier sources nationwide, and details on any available unit are confirmed on your written quote.
Applications
Trucks commonly running Mack engines
Factory engine options changed by model year. Always confirm against your engine serial number and VIN.

- The MP8 is common in Mack Anthem and Pinnacle highway trucks, but harness, accessory and software generation vary by model year and must be matched by serial number and VIN.
- The MP7 appears in Granite and lighter Pinnacle configurations and is not a direct replacement for an MP8.
- The MP10 is typically used in heavy-haul Granite, Pinnacle and Anthem trucks, and cooling and drivetrain requirements should be confirmed before matching.
- Older Mack CH, CX and Vision trucks may have E7 or ASET engines rather than MP engines; check the engine label before requesting a quote.
- Mack MP engines share architecture with Volvo D-series engines but are not direct substitutes, because components, calibrations and harnesses are brand specific.
FAQ
Mack engine questions
Is the Mack MP8 the same as a Volvo D13?
They share base architecture, but Mack engines use Mack-specific components, software and harness interfaces. We match a Mack engine to a Mack truck rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Where is the serial number on a Mack MP8?
It is stamped on the cylinder block and shown on the engine identification label. A Mack dealer can also look it up from the truck VIN or read it from the ECM.
What engine did the MP8 replace?
The MP series replaced the older Mack E7 and ASET engines around the 2007 emissions change. Those older engines are different designs and are not interchangeable with MP engines.
Can I replace an MP7 with an MP8?
Not as a simple swap. They differ in displacement, ratings, mounting and calibration. Replacing an engine with the same model and emissions generation is the straightforward path.
Does mDRIVE affect which engine I need?
Yes. The mDRIVE transmission communicates with the engine controls, so the replacement engine's software generation must be compatible. Tell us your transmission when you call.
Are you a Mack dealer?
No. Commercial-Engines.com is an independent sourcing company and is not affiliated with Mack Trucks. We search supplier sources nationwide for engines that match your truck.
