Manual & automated manual transmission

Used Eaton Fuller Truck Transmissions

Eaton Fuller covers two very different kinds of transmissions: traditional manual Roadranger gearboxes and automated manual units like UltraShift Plus and Endurant. Tell us which one is in your truck and we search supplier sources for a matching used unit.

Identification tag

How to identify your Eaton Fuller transmission

Every Eaton Fuller unit carries a metal ID tag riveted to the transmission case. The tag lists the model number, the serial number and usually a bill of materials (BOM) or part number. The BOM matters because two units with the same model number can still differ in input shaft, ratios or options.

Manual Roadranger model numbers follow a pattern such as RTLO-16910B. The letters describe the design (an O in the prefix generally indicates an overdrive top gear), the first two digits relate to torque capacity, and the last digits give the number of forward speeds. Automated units use their own model strings, so send a clear photo of the whole tag if you can.

01Manual Roadranger vs. automated manual: what is the difference?

A Roadranger is a fully manual, twin-countershaft gearbox. The driver works a clutch pedal and shifts with a range selector and, on 13- and 18-speeds, a splitter button.

UltraShift Plus and Endurant are automated manual transmissions (AMTs). Inside they are still gear-and-clutch transmissions, but a transmission control module and actuators handle the clutch and shifts. They are not torque-converter automatics like an Allison, and they are not interchangeable with a manual unit without changing the shifter, wiring, controls and often the clutch and pedal setup.

02Ratios, overdrive and direct drive

The same speed count can come in direct-drive or overdrive versions with different ratio spreads. Changing from direct to overdrive, or the other way around, changes engine speed at cruise and often means the rear axle ratio no longer suits the truck. Matching the model and BOM from your tag is the simplest way to keep the drivetrain the way it was built.

03Input shaft, clutch and PTO

Input shaft spline size and length must match your clutch and flywheel housing. If your truck runs a PTO, note which PTO opening is used and what is mounted there so the replacement can accept it.

04Automated units: controls and software

For UltraShift Plus and Endurant, the transmission control module, shifter and harness need to work with the engine and the truck's electrical system. Some swaps also need software configuration with dealer-level or Eaton service tools. Tell us whether you need the transmission only or the controls as well.

05Core and exchange

Core charges or exchange terms may apply depending on the supplier. If they do, they are confirmed on your quote before you commit, along with availability and freight.

Configuration

What we'll ask to match your unit

  • Is your unit a manual Roadranger or an automated UltraShift Plus or Endurant?
  • What model number, serial number and BOM are on the ID tag?
  • How many forward speeds, and is it direct drive or overdrive?
  • What engine is it behind, and what is the truck year, make and VIN?
  • Does the truck use a PTO, and which opening is it mounted on?
  • Do you need the clutch, shifter or control module as well?

FAQ

Eaton Fuller questions

Can I replace a manual Eaton Fuller with an automated one?

It can be done, but it is a conversion, not a swap. Pedals, shifter, wiring, control module and software usually change. Most buyers replace like for like, and that is what we search for first.

Is UltraShift Plus an automatic transmission?

No. UltraShift Plus is an automated manual. It uses a clutch and constant-mesh gears with computer-controlled shifting. A true automatic, like an Allison, uses a torque converter and planetary gears.

Where is the ID tag on an Eaton Fuller transmission?

It is a metal tag riveted to the transmission case. It can be dirty or painted over, so clean it before taking a photo. If it is missing, the truck's VIN and build sheet can help identify the original unit.

Does the model number alone guarantee a match?

Not always. The BOM or part number on the tag narrows down input shaft, ratios and options. Send everything on the tag and we use it when searching.

Do you have Eaton Fuller transmissions in stock?

We are an independent sourcing company, not a warehouse. We search supplier sources nationwide for your unit, and availability, condition details and freight are confirmed on your quote.
