01Engine families found in Volvo trucks
Most modern Volvo highway trucks run Volvo engines such as the D11, D13 or D16. Cummins engines have also been offered in some Volvo models and years. Your VIN and engine tag show exactly what is in your truck.
02Transmissions
The Volvo I-Shift automated manual is the most common transmission in newer Volvo trucks, with crawler-gear versions for heavier work. Some Volvos run Eaton Fuller manual transmissions instead.
03Why Volvo electronics make matching important
Volvo engines and I-Shift transmissions are integrated with the truck's electronic control units and software. A replacement engine or transmission often needs programming with Volvo dealer tools to communicate with the rest of the truck. Matching the engine serial and transmission label to your VIN keeps that work to a minimum.
04Aftertreatment, harness and cooling
Volvo engines from different emissions periods can use different aftertreatment parts, sensors and harnesses. Cooling package and charge air plumbing can also change between engine families. Tell us your emissions year and engine serial so we search for a compatible unit.
05What to have ready
To start a Volvo search, have:
- Full VIN
- Engine model and serial number
- I-Shift or other transmission label details if needed
- Truck model and year
- Whether you need a complete engine, long block or specific components
FAQ
Volvo Trucks engine & transmission questions
Which engine does my Volvo truck have?
Most have a Volvo D11, D13 or D16, but some were built with Cummins engines. Check the engine tag or the build data tied to your VIN.
Does a replacement Volvo engine need programming?
Usually some programming is needed so the engine works with the truck's other control units. A Volvo dealer or equipped shop can confirm.
Can you find an I-Shift for my VNL?
Yes. Send the transmission label details and VIN and we search supplier sources for a matching unit.
Will a Mack MP8 work in place of a Volvo D13?
The engines are related through the Volvo Group, but they are not simple drop-in replacements for each other. We search for the engine that matches your truck's build.
Are you a Volvo dealer?
No. We are an independent sourcing company. We search supplier sources nationwide and confirm availability and freight on your quote.
