Identification tag

How to identify your 10-speed

Look for the metal ID tag riveted to the transmission case. It lists the model (for example RTLO-16910B), the serial number and a BOM or part number.

A model number ending in 10 indicates a 10-speed. An O in the prefix generally means an overdrive top gear; without it, the unit is typically direct drive. The BOM narrows down input shaft and other options, so include it when you call or submit the form.

01How a 10-speed shifts

The 10-speed uses a five-position shift pattern with a range selector. Gears one through five are in low range; flip the range selector and the same pattern gives six through ten. There is no splitter, which is the main difference from a 13- or 18-speed.

02Direct drive vs. overdrive

Direct-drive and overdrive 10-speeds have different top-gear ratios. Swapping one for the other changes engine RPM at highway speed and can leave your rear axle ratio poorly matched. The safest choice is to replace with the same model and BOM.

03Input shaft, clutch and PTO

Confirm input shaft spline size and length against your clutch. If the truck runs a PTO, note the opening it uses and the PTO model so the replacement can accept it.

04Core and exchange

Core charges or exchange terms may apply depending on the supplier. If they do, they are confirmed on your quote before you commit, along with availability and freight.

Configuration

What we'll ask to match your unit

  • What model, serial number and BOM are on the ID tag?
  • Is it direct drive or overdrive?
  • What engine and torque rating is it behind?
  • What is the truck year, make, model and VIN?
  • Does the truck use a PTO?
  • Do you need the clutch or shift tower as well?

FAQ

Eaton Fuller 10-Speed questions

What does RTLO stand for on an Eaton 10-speed?

It is part of Eaton's model code. The O generally indicates an overdrive top gear. The full model and BOM on the tag tell you more than the prefix alone.

Can I replace a 10-speed with a 13-speed?

It is possible in many trucks, but it changes the shifter, air lines for the splitter and how the truck drives. Most owners replace a 10-speed with a 10-speed, and that is what we search for unless you ask otherwise.

My tag is missing. Can you still help?

Yes. The truck's VIN and build sheet usually list the original transmission. Photos of the case and shifter also help.

Will a 10-speed from a different truck make fit mine?

Often, if the model and BOM match, but clutch housing, shift linkage and crossmember details can vary. We confirm what we can from your information before you buy.

How do I get a quote?

Call us or submit the form with your tag details and truck VIN. We search supplier sources nationwide and confirm availability and freight on your quote.
