01D11, D13 and D16 overview

Volvo's North American truck engines are inline sixes in three sizes. The D11 is roughly 10.8 liters and is used in regional and weight-sensitive applications. The D13 is roughly 12.8 liters and is the most common engine in Volvo VNL and VNR highway trucks. The D16 is roughly 16.1 liters and serves heavy-haul and high-horsepower applications.

The D13 replaced the earlier D12 in North America around the 2007 emissions change. Since then it has been revised several times, including later versions with turbo compounding on some ratings. The D16 has been offered in higher-spec Volvo models over a long period with its own generations.

The engine size is usually marked on the engine and the truck, but the serial number is what pins down the exact generation and configuration.

02Finding the engine serial number

Volvo engines carry an identification plate or label with the engine serial number and model designation, and the serial number is also stamped on the cylinder block. The emissions label shows the model year the engine was certified to.

If you cannot locate the labels, a Volvo truck dealer can retrieve the engine information from the VIN, and the ECM stores the engine serial number and software details that can be read with Volvo diagnostic tools.

Send us clear photos of the labels and the truck VIN so our staff can confirm the engine generation before we start searching.

  • Engine serial number
  • Engine model (D11, D13 or D16) and emissions year
  • Truck VIN
  • Transmission type (manual or I-Shift)

03Emissions eras and aftertreatment

Volvo D13 engines from 2007 to 2009 use EGR and a diesel particulate filter. From 2010, Volvo engines added SCR with DEF. Later engines were updated for the 2014 and 2017 greenhouse-gas standards, with software and hardware revisions along the way.

Each emissions era changes the ECM software, sensors and aftertreatment communication. A 2010 D13 and a 2017 D13 are not the same replacement job, even though both are SCR engines. Matching the emissions year on the engine label avoids wiring and software mismatches.

If your truck has had aftertreatment components replaced or modified, tell us. We need to know what is actually on the truck, not just what it left the factory with.

04Horsepower, torque and I-Shift pairing

The D13 has been offered in a range of ratings from the upper 300s to around 500 horsepower. The D16 is rated higher, up to around 600 horsepower in some versions. The D11 is rated below the D13 for lighter work.

Most newer Volvo trucks use the I-Shift automated manual transmission, which communicates closely with the engine controls. A replacement engine's software generation must work with the I-Shift and the truck's electrical architecture. Let us know your transmission when you request a quote.

06What to tell us when you call

Have the engine serial number, the truck VIN and the emissions year ready. Let us know whether you need a complete engine or a long block, and what you plan to reuse, such as the turbo, aftertreatment, air compressor and engine harness.

If the engine failed, describe what happened. That helps us understand which parts of your current engine may be reusable and what to watch for in a replacement. Any available units are confirmed with specifics on your written quote.

  • The D13 is the most common engine in Volvo VNL and VNR trucks, but engine generation, harness and accessory configuration change across model years and must be matched by serial number and VIN.
  • The D11 appears in regional Volvo VNR and some VNL configurations and is not a direct replacement for a D13.
  • The D16 is typically found in VNX, VHD and high-horsepower VNL trucks, and cooling and drivetrain requirements must be confirmed before matching.
  • Volvo engines are not direct substitutes for Mack MP-series engines despite shared architecture, because components, calibrations and harnesses differ by brand.

FAQ

Volvo engine questions

Is a Volvo D13 the same as a Mack MP8?

They share base architecture within the Volvo Group, but they are configured differently with brand-specific parts, software and harnesses. We source a Volvo engine for a Volvo truck and a Mack engine for a Mack truck.

Where is the serial number on a Volvo D13?

It appears on the engine identification label and is stamped on the block. A Volvo dealer can also look it up from the truck VIN or read it from the ECM.

Can I put a newer D13 in an older Volvo truck?

Usually not without significant changes. Later D13 engines use different software, sensors and aftertreatment integration. A replacement should match your original emissions year.

Does the I-Shift transmission affect which engine I need?

Yes. The I-Shift communicates with the engine controls, so the replacement engine's software generation needs to be compatible. Tell us your transmission model when you call.

What replaced the Volvo D12?

The D13 replaced the D12 in North America around the 2007 emissions change. They are different engines, so a D12 truck should be matched with a D12 or a carefully checked conversion.
