Identification tag
How to identify your mDRIVE
The mDRIVE carries an identification label on the transmission housing with the model designation, serial number and part number. Note whether it is a standard mDRIVE or an mDRIVE HD.
The truck VIN lets the original build be checked, including the engine and transmission specification, which matters because the mDRIVE works closely with Mack's engine electronics.
01Automated manual, not automatic
The mDRIVE shifts a gear-and-clutch gearbox automatically. It has no torque converter, so it is a different kind of transmission from an Allison automatic.
02mDRIVE vs. mDRIVE HD
The standard mDRIVE is aimed at highway work. The mDRIVE HD is built for vocational trucks and is available with extra low crawler gears. Match the version on your label so the truck keeps the low-speed control and ratios it was spec'd with.
03Control unit, software and harness
The mDRIVE's control unit must communicate with the truck's engine and vehicle electronics. A replacement may need software and parameter programming with Mack dealer tools. Confirm connector and harness compatibility.
04PTO and clutch
Vocational Macks often run PTOs. Note the PTO setup, and whether you need the clutch or clutch actuator with the transmission.
05Core and exchange
Core charges or exchange terms may apply depending on the supplier. If they do, they are confirmed on your quote before you commit, along with availability and freight.

What we'll ask to match your unit
- What model designation, serial number and part number are on the label?
- Is it a standard mDRIVE or an mDRIVE HD, and does it have crawler gears?
- What is the truck year, model and VIN?
- Which Mack engine is it paired with?
- Does the truck use a PTO?
- Do you need the clutch, actuator or control unit too?
FAQ
Mack mDRIVE questions
Is the mDRIVE an automatic transmission?
No. It is an automated manual. It uses a clutch and gears with automated shifting, not a torque converter.
Is the mDRIVE related to the Volvo I-Shift?
Yes. Mack and Volvo are both part of the Volvo Group and the mDRIVE is based on the I-Shift design. Software, controls and some parts can differ, so we search for the exact unit your Mack uses.
Will a used mDRIVE need programming?
Usually. The transmission needs to be set up to work with the truck's software, which a Mack dealer or equipped shop can handle.
Can an mDRIVE replace my Mack manual transmission?
That is a conversion that changes pedals, wiring, controls and software. We focus on like-for-like replacement.
Do you have mDRIVE units in stock?
We do not hold inventory. We search supplier sources nationwide and confirm availability and freight on your quote.
