01579 history: 2012 launch and the 2021 New Model 579
Peterbilt unveiled the Model 579 at the Mid-America Trucking Show in March 2012, with a fully detachable sleeper, and production began that July with the 12.9-liter PACCAR MX as standard. A 58-inch sleeper was added in 2015.
On February 3, 2021 Peterbilt unveiled the New Model 579, offered as a day cab and with an integral 80-inch UltraLoft sleeper and powered by the 2021 PACCAR MX-13 and MX-11. Peterbilt's current 579 lineup lists 44-, 58- and 72-inch sleepers, 80-inch Discrete and UltraLoft sleepers and a day cab.
02Engines in the 579
The PACCAR MX-13 has been in the 579 since launch, and Peterbilt opened MX-11 orders for the 579 and 567 in November 2015, with production from January 2016. Peterbilt's current 579 page lists the MX-13 at up to 510 hp and the MX-11 at up to 445 hp.
The Cummins X15 is also offered, listed by Peterbilt at up to 605 hp. Natural gas options include the Cummins X15N (available from the third quarter of 2024), ISX12N and L9N. A low-NOx MX-13 certified for California was added in 2024.
03Transmissions in the 579
Peterbilt's current 579 transmission list includes the PACCAR TX-12 and TX-18 automated transmissions, Eaton Fuller manuals in 9, 10, 11, 13, 15 and 18 speeds, Eaton UltraShift PLUS in 10, 11, 13 and 18 speeds, and the Eaton Cummins Endurant HD and Endurant XD.
PACCAR's 12-speed automated was first offered on the 579 and 567 in 2017, and the Endurant was engineered for integration with the Cummins X15. Because so many combinations exist, the transmission label is the only reliable way to know what is in your truck.
04Why 579s need careful matching
Two 579s from the same year can have different engines, different emissions generations and different transmissions. An MX-13 from the original 579 and one from the New Model 579 may differ in sensors, harness, software and aftertreatment, and an X15 truck uses different mounts, cooling and wiring than an MX-13 truck.
If your 579 is a heavy-haul spec with an 18-speed or TX-18, tell us. Torque rating and transmission matter as much as the engine model when we search.
05What to have ready
Before you call about a 579, gather:
- Full VIN
- Engine model and serial number (MX-13, MX-11 or Cummins X15)
- Transmission label: TX-12, TX-18, UltraShift PLUS, Endurant or Fuller model and serial
- Horsepower rating and how the truck is used (linehaul, regional, heavy haul)
- Whether you need a complete engine, long block or transmission only
FAQ
Peterbilt 579 engine & transmission questions
What engine is in my Peterbilt 579?
Many 579s have a PACCAR MX-13, but the MX-11, Cummins X15 and natural gas engines have also been offered. Check the engine dataplate or the build data tied to your VIN.
Is the New Model 579 different from the earlier 579?
Yes. Peterbilt unveiled the New Model 579 in February 2021 with updated engines and an integral 80-inch UltraLoft sleeper option. Tell us your VIN so we know which version you have.
Can you find a TX-12 for my 579?
We can search for one. Send the transmission label details and VIN so we match the right unit and controls.
Will a Kenworth T680 engine fit my 579?
Both are PACCAR trucks and share engine families, but emissions year, software and installation details still need to match. We compare serial numbers before quoting.
Are you a Peterbilt dealer?
No. We are an independent sourcing company. We search supplier sources nationwide and confirm availability and freight on your quote.
