Identification
How to identify your MP8
Read us the engine serial number from the Mack engine identification label; it is also stored in the ECU and readable with Mack Premium Tech Tool.
Tell us the rating name if you know it. Mack ratings such as MaxiCruise and Maxidyne describe different torque characteristics, and matching the rating family keeps the truck driving the way it was spec'd.
- Engine serial number
- Truck VIN, year and model
- Horsepower rating and rating family
- Transmission: manual or mDRIVE
01MP8 generations
The MP8 replaced Mack's earlier engine line for the 2007 emissions rules with cooled EGR and a DPF. The 2010 engine added SCR with DEF. Later updates for the greenhouse gas rules brought calibration and hardware changes, and a turbo-compound version was added for some highway ratings.
As with other modern engines, each step changed controls and aftertreatment. Quote by truck year and VIN.
02MP8 vs Volvo D13
The MP8 and the Volvo D13 share the same Volvo Group 13-liter base engine. Many internal parts are common, but Mack-specific calibration, ratings, accessories, engine brake (PowerLeash) and truck integration differ. A Volvo D13 is not a plug-and-play replacement in a Mack.
03Vocational MP8 builds
In Granite trucks the MP8 often runs with front or rear engine PTOs, heavy-duty fans and vocational ratings. Those accessories and the flywheel housing may differ from a highway Pinnacle or Anthem build. Tell us what PTOs and body equipment the truck runs.
04mDRIVE pairing
Many MP8 trucks use the mDRIVE automated transmission, which depends on the engine calibration and data link. Confirm your transmission so the replacement engine is set up correctly.

FAQ
Mack MP8 questions
Is the Mack MP8 the same as the Volvo D13?
They share the same base engine, but calibration, ratings, accessories, engine brake and truck integration differ. We match the Mack-specific build.
What is the difference between MaxiCruise and Maxidyne?
They are Mack rating families with different torque characteristics. Your rating is on the engine information or in the ECU.
Where is the MP8 serial number?
On the Mack engine identification label, and stored in the ECU.
Can a highway MP8 go into my Granite?
Possibly, but PTO provisions, accessories and ratings may differ. We match by serial number, VIN and application.
Does the MP8 use DEF?
2010-and-later MP8 engines use SCR with DEF. 2007-2009 engines use a DPF without DEF.
Does a used MP8 need programming?
Usually. The ECU generally needs programming to your truck, plus mDRIVE integration where equipped.
