Identification

How to identify your D11

Read us the engine serial number from the Volvo engine identification label; it is also stored in the ECU and readable with Volvo diagnostic software.

Confirm the engine model on the label or build sheet. The D11 and D13 are similar in appearance, and the VIN is the quickest way to verify which one the truck was built with.

  • Engine serial number and engine model from the label
  • Truck VIN, year and model
  • Horsepower rating and transmission

01D11 vs D13

The D11 is a smaller-displacement Volvo engine, chosen for weight savings and lower cost in regional, P&D and vocational work. It shares design approach with the D13 but is a different block and rotating assembly. A D13 in a D11 truck is a repower, not a replacement.

02D11 vs Mack MP7

The D11 and the Mack MP7 come from the same Volvo Group 11-liter base engine. Calibration, accessories and truck integration differ by brand, so a Mack MP7 is not plug-and-play in a Volvo truck. Supplier listings sometimes cross-reference the two; we confirm the brand-specific build.

03Duty cycle and availability

D11 trucks often run short-haul and vocational routes with more idle time and stop-and-go running, so engine hours can be as telling as miles. Fewer D11 trucks were built than D13 trucks, which can make matching builds less common. Being flexible on long block vs dressed engine can widen the search.

FAQ

Volvo D11 questions

Is the Volvo D11 the same as the Mack MP7?

They share the same Volvo Group base engine, but calibration, accessories and truck integration differ. We match the brand-specific build.

Can I put a D13 in my D11 truck?

It is a repower involving mounts, cooling, wiring and programming. Most repair jobs are better served with a matching D11.

Where is the D11 serial number?

On the Volvo engine identification label, and stored in the ECU.

Does the D11 use DEF?

Yes. The D11 uses SCR with DEF along with a DPF and cooled EGR.

Are used D11 engines harder to find than D13s?

Often, because fewer were built. We search supplier sources nationwide and confirm condition and included components on your quote.
