Identification

How to identify your D13

Read us the engine serial number from the Volvo engine identification label on the engine; the serial number is also stamped on the block and stored in the engine ECU, where Volvo Premium Tech Tool can read it.

Tell us whether the engine is a turbo-compound version. You can usually see the turbo-compound unit on the exhaust side behind the turbo, and it is listed on the truck build information.

  • Engine serial number from the label or block
  • Truck VIN, year and model
  • Standard or turbo-compound engine
  • Rating and transmission (manual or I-Shift)

01D13 generations: 2007, 2010 and later

The D13 replaced the D12 for the 2007 emissions rules with cooled EGR and a DPF. The 2010 engine added SCR with DEF. Later updates for the greenhouse gas rules brought calibration, piston and turbo changes, and a turbo-compound version.

Each step changed the ECU, sensors and aftertreatment. A 2010-and-later engine is not a direct swap into a 2007-2009 truck, and the reverse is also true. Quote by truck year and VIN.

02Turbo-compound vs standard D13

The turbo-compound D13 adds a turbine after the turbocharger that returns exhaust energy to the crankshaft through a gear drive. It changes the exhaust plumbing, rear gear train and calibration. A standard D13 and a turbo-compound D13 are not interchangeable without parts and programming, so tell us which one your truck has.

03D13 vs Mack MP8

The D13 and the Mack MP8 come from the same Volvo Group 13-liter base engine. They share many internal parts, but calibration, accessories, engine brake setup, front-end layout and truck integration differ. A Mack MP8 is not a plug-and-play replacement in a Volvo truck. Supplier listings sometimes cross-reference the two, so we confirm the brand-specific build.

04I-Shift and Volvo Engine Brake

Most later D13 trucks use the I-Shift automated transmission, and many have the Volvo Engine Brake. Both rely on the engine calibration and data links. Tell us your transmission and whether the truck has the engine brake so the replacement engine is set up to match.

FAQ

Volvo D13 questions

Is the Volvo D13 the same as the Mack MP8?

They share the same Volvo Group base engine, but calibration, accessories, engine brake and truck integration differ. We match the brand-specific build to your truck.

How do I tell if my D13 is turbo-compound?

Look for the turbo-compound unit on the exhaust side behind the turbo, or check the truck build information. Send us the serial number and VIN and we can help confirm.

Can a 2010 D13 replace a 2008 D13?

Not as a simple swap. The 2010 engine uses SCR with DEF and different controls. Quote the version the truck was built with.

Where is the D13 serial number?

On the Volvo engine identification label, stamped on the block, and stored in the ECU.

Does a used D13 need programming?

Usually. The ECU generally needs to be programmed to your truck using Volvo software, along with I-Shift integration where equipped.

Does the D13 use DEF?

2010-and-later D13 engines use SCR with DEF. 2007-2009 engines use a DPF without DEF.
