Identification

How to identify your DD16

Read us the engine serial number from the block stamp or engine label. It is also stored in the MCM. DD16 serial numbers are commonly reported to start with 473.

Because the DD16 is often in severe-duty trucks, the rating and the truck's cooling and PTO setup matter. Give us the truck VIN along with the serial number.

  • Engine serial number
  • Truck VIN, year and model
  • Horsepower and torque rating
  • Transmission and PTO setup

01DD16 vs DD15

The DD16 is a larger-displacement engine than the DD15 with higher torque ratings. It is not a DD15 with a different calibration; the block and internals differ. Heavy-haul trucks spec'd with a DD16 also tend to have larger cooling packages and heavier drivetrains, so match the engine to the truck.

02Turbo-compound and high-value parts

Many DD16 engines use a turbo-compound unit, and all use expensive turbo and EGR hardware. Ask what is included and whether those parts came off the same engine.

03Severe-duty history

DD16 engines often spend their lives at high load: heavy haul, logging, oilfield. Mileage alone does not tell the whole story. Ask about the donor truck's application and whether hours are available from the MCM.

Before you buy

Questions to ask about a used DD16

  • What application did the donor truck run in?
  • Is the mileage and engine hours documented from the MCM or donor VIN?
  • Is an oil analysis or running video available?
  • Is the turbo-compound (if equipped) included?
  • Are the MCM, harness, turbo and EGR parts included?
  • Does the rating match my truck?
  • What are the core requirements?

FAQ

Detroit Diesel DD16 questions

Is the DD16 the same block as the DD15?

No. The DD16 is a larger displacement with a different block and internals.

What trucks use the DD16?

Mainly heavy-haul and vocational Daimler Truck chassis such as Western Star and Freightliner 122SD and some Cascadia specs.

Can I upgrade a DD15 truck to a DD16?

It is a significant conversion. Cooling, mounting, controllers and drivetrain ratings all need to be addressed.

Does the DD16 use DEF?

Yes. The DD16 uses SCR with DEF along with a DPF and EGR.

Where is the DD16 serial number?

On the block stamp and the engine label, and stored in the MCM.
