Identification
How to identify your DD13
Read us the engine serial number stamped on the block or printed on the engine label. It is also stored in the MCM and can be read with DiagnosticLink.
DD13 serial numbers are commonly reported to start with 471, which separates them from DD15 and DD16 engines. Confirm the truck year and emissions generation as well.
- Engine serial number
- Truck VIN, year and model
- Emissions generation (EPA10, GHG14, GHG17)
- Rating and transmission
01DD13 vs DD15
The DD13 and DD15 share the same design family but are different displacements with different blocks, crankshafts and many components. A DD13 truck is often spec'd for lower weight, so swapping to a DD15 brings cooling, mounting and controller changes. Quote a DD13 for a DD13 truck.
02Generations and controller compatibility
Like the DD15, the DD13 has gone through EPA10, GHG14 and GHG17 versions with changes to controllers, sensors and calibration. The MCM, CPC and ACM must line up with the engine generation. A used DD13 typically needs programming to your truck.
03Vocational DD13 builds
The DD13 is common in dump, mixer and other vocational trucks, where PTO provisions, fan drives and accessory layouts can differ from a highway tractor build. If your truck has a rear engine PTO or a specific front-end setup, tell us so the supplier search focuses on a matching build.

FAQ
Detroit Diesel DD13 questions
Is a DD13 a smaller DD15?
They are the same design family, but the DD13 is a different displacement with its own block and internals. They are not interchangeable without major work.
Does the DD13 use DEF?
EPA10-and-later DD13 engines use SCR with DEF along with a DPF and EGR.
Can I put a DD15 in my DD13 truck?
It is a conversion involving cooling, mounts, controllers and programming. Most repair jobs are better served with a matching DD13.
Where is the DD13 serial number?
Stamped on the block and printed on the engine label, and stored in the MCM.
Will a vocational DD13 work in a highway tractor?
Possibly, but accessories, PTO provisions and ratings can differ. We match by serial number and truck VIN.
