Identification

How to identify your ISM

Read us the ESN and CPL from the Cummins dataplate on the engine. On many ISM engines the dataplate is on the rocker housing or front gear cover; if it is unreadable, the ESN is stored in the ECM.

Because the ISM shares heritage with the M11 and the ISM name was used across several emissions generations, the CPL and ECM type are the most reliable way to confirm exactly what you have.

  • ESN and CPL from the dataplate
  • ECM type printed on the module
  • Application: truck, fire apparatus, bus or equipment (calibrations and accessories differ)
  • Year, make and model of the vehicle

01ISM vs M11

The ISM is the electronically controlled successor to the M11 Celect. The two look similar and share basic architecture, but an M11 and an ISM use different engine controls and fuel system components. Do not assume an M11 engine or ECM will work in an ISM truck.

02Emissions generations

ISM engines exist in pre-EGR, EGR and 2007 DPF versions. The EGR engines add a VGT turbo, EGR valve and cooler; the 2007 engines add a diesel particulate filter and matching sensors and calibration. Each step changes the harness and ECM.

Match the generation your vehicle was built with. A pre-EGR ISM is a much simpler engine, but it is not a legal or practical swap into a chassis certified for a later emissions year.

03Fire apparatus and bus applications

The ISM was common in fire apparatus, transit buses and motorcoaches, where calibrations, cooling packages, accessory drives and flywheel housings can differ from a truck engine. If your ISM is in one of these, tell us the body builder or bus model so the supplier search starts with the right build.

04Availability and condition expectations

The ISM has been out of on-highway production for well over a decade, so used engines vary widely in hours, miles and history. Expect to confirm condition carefully, and be flexible on whether you want a complete dressed engine or a long block to reuse your own accessories.

Questions to ask about a used ISM

  • Is this a pre-EGR, EGR or 2007 DPF ISM, and does the CPL match my vehicle?
  • What application did it come out of: truck, fire apparatus, bus or equipment?
  • Is the mileage or hour reading documented?
  • Is an oil analysis report or running video available?
  • Is the ECM included, and which ECM type is it?
  • Does it include the turbo, EGR parts (if equipped), harness and flywheel housing?
  • Is a core required, and are there core condition rules?

FAQ

Cummins ISM questions

Is the ISM the same as the ISX?

No. The ISM is a 10.8-liter engine; the ISX is a 15-liter engine. They are different blocks and are not interchangeable.

Can an M11 replace an ISM?

Not directly. They share architecture, but the controls and fuel system differ. Replacing an ISM with an ISM of the same generation and CPL is the straightforward route.

Does the ISM use DEF?

No. On-highway ISM engines ended before SCR became standard, so they do not use DEF. 2007 versions do use a DPF.

My ISM is in a fire truck. Does that matter?

Yes. Fire and bus ISM engines can have different calibrations, accessories and housings. Tell us the apparatus or bus model along with the ESN and CPL.

How do I find the ISM serial number?

It is on the Cummins dataplate along with the CPL. If the plate is missing, a shop can read the ESN from the ECM.
