01Hino J08E and J05E overview

Hino's medium-duty trucks in North America have mainly used two engine families. The J08E is a roughly 7.7-liter inline six used in Class 6 and 7 conventional trucks. The J05E is a roughly 5.1-liter inline four used in lighter cab-over and conventional models.

Both engines have been produced in several emissions versions, with changes to fuel systems, EGR and aftertreatment as standards tightened. The model name alone does not identify a replacement; the emissions year and engine number do.

02Finding the engine number

Hino engines carry an engine number stamped on the block, and an emissions label shows the engine family and certification year. The engine model designation is often followed by suffix letters that indicate a specific variant.

If you cannot find the labels, a Hino dealer can look up the engine specification from the VIN, and engine information can be read with Hino diagnostic software.

Send photos of the stamping and labels so our staff can confirm the variant before searching.

  • Transmission type

03Emissions versions and aftertreatment

Later J08E and J05E engines use a diesel particulate filter, and engines built for 2010 and later standards add SCR with DEF. Each step changed the ECM, sensors and wiring the engine expects.

A replacement should match the emissions year of your original engine. An earlier engine in a later truck, or the reverse, can create wiring, software and compliance problems.

04Application notes

The J08E is common in Hino 258, 268 and 338 conventional trucks, and the J05E in lighter models such as the 155 and 195 cab-overs. Configurations vary by model and year, including accessory drives, oil pans and PTO provisions.

Vocational bodies such as box vans, dumps and tow bodies may rely on specific PTO or accessory setups. Tell us about the body and any PTO so we can match the right configuration.

  • The J08E is commonly found in Hino 258, 268 and 338 conventionals, with accessory and PTO configurations that vary by body type and year.
  • The J05E appears in lighter Hino cab-over models such as the 155 and 195, and is not interchangeable with the J08E.
  • Newer Hino L and M Series trucks should be matched carefully by VIN, since engine variants and emissions equipment differ from earlier conventional models.

FAQ

Hino engine questions

What is the difference between the J08E and J05E?

The J08E is a larger inline six for Class 6 and 7 trucks, and the J05E is a smaller inline four for lighter models. They are not interchangeable.

Where is the engine number on a Hino J08E?

It is stamped on the engine block, and the emissions label shows the engine family and year. A Hino dealer can also look it up from the VIN.

Why does the suffix on my engine model matter?

The suffix letters identify a specific variant of the engine. Different variants can have different fuel systems, emissions equipment and accessories.

Does my truck's body affect the engine I need?

It can. PTO and accessory setups for dumps, tow bodies and other vocational bodies may require a specific engine configuration. Tell us about the body when you call.

Are you a Hino dealer?

No. Commercial-Engines.com is an independent sourcing company and is not affiliated with Hino Motors. We search supplier sources nationwide for engines that match your truck.

Can I use an older J08E in a newer truck?

Usually not without significant changes. Emissions equipment, software and wiring differ by year. Match the emissions year of your original engine.
