Used Isuzu Truck Engines
Send us your Isuzu engine number and truck VIN, and we search supplier sources nationwide for a used 4HK1 or 6HK1 matched to your truck. Availability, condition and freight vary by unit and are confirmed on your quote.
014HK1 and 6HK1 overview
The 4HK1 is a roughly 5.2-liter inline four diesel used in Isuzu N-Series trucks such as the NPR-HD, NQR and NRR, and in other light and medium-duty applications. The 6HK1 is a roughly 7.8-liter inline six used in Isuzu F-Series trucks and other medium-duty vehicles.
Both engines have been produced in several emissions versions over the years. The engine model alone does not identify a replacement; the emissions year, variant and truck VIN do.
02Gas or diesel: check first
Many Isuzu NPR trucks were built with gasoline V8 engines rather than diesels. If your NPR has a gasoline engine, it is not a 4HK1, and the replacement search is completely different.
Check the engine label or the VIN before requesting a quote. If you are not sure, send us the VIN and we will help identify what the truck came with.
03Finding the engine number
Isuzu diesel engines carry an engine number stamped on the block, and an emissions label shows the engine family and certification year. The engine model may carry a suffix, such as TC, that identifies the variant.
If labels are missing, an Isuzu truck dealer can look up the engine specification from the VIN.
- Engine number and model with suffix
- Emissions year
- Truck VIN and model
- Transmission type
04Emissions versions and aftertreatment
Later 4HK1 engines use a diesel particulate filter, and engines built for 2010 and later standards add further aftertreatment. Each change affected the ECM, sensors and wiring.
A replacement should match the emissions year of your original engine to avoid wiring, software and compliance problems.

Applications
Trucks commonly running Isuzu engines
Factory engine options changed by model year. Always confirm against your engine serial number and VIN.

- The 4HK1 is common in diesel Isuzu NPR-HD, NQR and NRR trucks, but many NPR models use gasoline engines, so confirm by VIN before sourcing.
- Later Isuzu FTR trucks may use a version of the 4HK1 rather than the 6HK1; confirm by engine label and VIN.
- The 6HK1 appears in Isuzu F-Series trucks such as earlier FTR and FVR models, with configurations varying by year and body type.
FAQ
Isuzu engine questions
Does every Isuzu NPR have a 4HK1?
No. Many NPR trucks use gasoline V8 engines. Check the engine label or VIN to confirm what your truck has.
What is the difference between the 4HK1 and 6HK1?
The 4HK1 is a smaller inline four, and the 6HK1 is a larger inline six. They are used in different truck classes and are not interchangeable.
What does TC mean on a 4HK1?
The suffix identifies a specific variant of the engine. Variants can differ in fuel system, turbo and emissions equipment, so give us the full model designation.
Where is the engine number on an Isuzu 4HK1?
It is stamped on the engine block, and the emissions label shows the engine family and year. An Isuzu dealer can also look it up from the VIN.
Are you an Isuzu dealer?
No. Commercial-Engines.com is an independent sourcing company and is not affiliated with Isuzu. We search supplier sources nationwide for engines that match your truck.
Can I use an older 4HK1 in a newer truck?
Usually not without significant changes. Emissions equipment, software and wiring differ by year, so match the emissions year of your original engine.
